Do-Si-Do’s and Don’ts and other helpful tips
A guide to square dance manners — a circle of fun and chaos
Do-Si-Do’s
Smile & introduce yourself or wear a name tag.
Acknowledge the Caller before and after the tip and dance.
At the end of the tip, join hands and express your thanks before leaving the square.
Do-Si-Don’t’s
Grab and Yank — the aim is steady guidance, not tug-of-war.
Panic if you mess up, just grab a partner and keep dancing. We’re here to dance, not figure out what we did wrong.
Step on your partner’s toes.

Floor Hog
If you tend to take up too much space, remember to keep your promenade compact — others appreciate the room (and taking less steps).
Sitting Duck
If your square has broken down, don’t just stand there. Make a normal line and the Caller will pick you up and get you dancing again.
- Pay attention to the caller — they are here to help us have a fun dance.
- Wear comfortable footwear — no new shoes on dance night.
- Help others by giving gentle cues, not criticism.
- Square dancing is teamwork – nobody’s perfect, and that’s what makes it fun.
