The Accidental Outlaws of Square Dancing
The Story of the Brushy Mountain Squares
A short origin story describing how the Brushy Mountain Squares started.
On the way home from square dance class one night, George Hawkins and Angie Wittwer started texting a few square dancing friends. And thatβs when someone said the words that would change everything:
βYou should start your own club.β
Another friend chimed in,
βYeah, call it Brushy Mountain Squares β because you guys act like outlaws!β
We laughed until our sides hurt, joking about being the outlaws of square dancing. But the next thing we knew, the jokes started becoming real. Within days, two full squares of dancers wanted to join in on the fun.
Thatβs when Jason Guinn and Rosie Caudle stepped in, creating a webpage to make it official. Suddenly, what started as a joking comment had turned into something bigger β a club with heart, humor, and a touch of rebellion.
And just like that, Brushy Mountain Squares was born β a traveling, laughing, rule-breaking, square-dancing family of outlaws who do things their own way and have more fun doing it.
