Socks, Stars & Salutes

The past couple of weekends took Brushy Mountain Squares on a trip from the 50s and 60s, I mean the 1950s and 1960s, to 1776.

Socks

On Saturday night, we traveled to Young at Heart for their 50s & 60s Sock Hop Dance, featuring Chuck and Kristy Woods. The themed decorations, great music, and wonderful hospitality made for an enjoyable evening. Someone even managed to capture a candid photo of part of our group gathered around the table between tips. One of our newest member, Neckbone attended his first dance as a badge wearing Brushy Mountain Outlaw. However his attendance was a surprise for Big Man who was in charge of the badges and so Neckbone had to survive without one.

Stars

The Friday before that, we visited Little T’s for their Proud to Be an American Dance, called by Travis Cook. While we didn’t manage to snap any photos that night, we still had a great time dancing and catching up with friends.

Salutes

Sadly, this Friday night dance marked the end of a tip for a beloved member of Brushy Mountain Squares, Torch (better known as John Thorne). While we didn’t know it at the time, we’re very grateful to have shared one more evening of laughter, music and friendship with him doing the very thing that made us friends in the first place. He will be deeply missed here on the earthly dance floor but we know he is lighting up the big dance floor in the sky with the dancers who have gone before.

The music eventually fades, the decorations come down, and the miles home are traveled. But the friendships and memories we make along the way are what truly makes this beauty we call square dancing special. We’re grateful for every tip we get to share together, and we hope to see you at the next dance.
